Where it grows
Nardostachys jatamansi is an alpine plant of the Himalayan belt, found at high altitude. The hairy appearance of its rhizome gives it the name jatamansi, from jata, matted hair. In Hindi it is often called balchhad.
It is a Himalayan species under collection pressure, which is part of why it is used in small proportion in formulations.
